It didn't feel gimmicky to me, and the character development was surprisingly in-depth considering how much of it is in notes. Looking at the trilogy you linked, it sounds slightly similar, but I think it takes it in a whole other direction-- plus you have what's actually a pretty good novel to read as you go. I obviously wouldn't go so far as to say that it's the first book to ever do the "extra correspondence" thing, but it did fit in under weird books and I think it's a pretty fresh take on it. ^^
