It's set in Mexico but close to the Texas border. They talk about going to San Antonio for business. It's set during one of the revolutions (Zapata, if I remember right, it's been a while since I read it.) I can highly recommend it. Each chapter starts with a recipe. Fast read, totally sucks you in, stays with you a long time.

Junot Diaz' "The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao" is set in the U.S. and the Dominican Republic. It doesn't quite cross into magical realism, but there are definite elements of it. Great read.
