Help with a chromebook?

(Anonymous) 2013-12-18 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
My neighbor has a chromebook that she brought over to get help with, but I don't know anything about chromebooks.

The situation is this: She doesn't have internet, but wants to play games, but there were no games on the computer, like with a windows computer, or whatever. We tried using the chromebook/google play thing, but those require the internet to play the games.

So, does anyone know how to add non-internet needing free games to a chromebook?

Basically the only choice she has is downloading game apps from the Chrome store.

The Chromebook pretty much relies on internet, so your neighbor will need it.

I was under the impression that the whole deal with a chromebook is that you need the internet to do pretty much anything on it?

Is that the case? I'll let her know, thanks. :/

I recently got a new computer because I hated the way the chromebook needed the internet for everything.

There should be a section in the chrome web store called "for your desktop" that has games that run offline. But, a chromebook is really not designed to work very well offline.

I'll show her those, and see if she's interested in the apps that are available, thanks for the heads up.

...why do they have a chromebook if they don't have internet?

Well, my guess is because it was cheap. :/ My friend (well, technically my parent's friend, but whatever), is low income and actually is sharing the computer with someone else; either she wasn't told that internet was necessarily, or she was told, but didn't "get" it. Or it was the cheapest computer. I honestly don't know.

Oh, ouch. I want to find whoever told her she could do anything useful offline with a Chromebook and punch them in the mouth.

Like above anon said, here's the available offline Google apps. Chromebook has WiFi, so what she should do is find a place with free WiFi (cafe, library, etc.), go there to download what she likes, and then use it offline at home. She'll have to use that strategy a lot with a Chromebook.

From what I'm hearing, me too. :/

I'll show her those tomorrow, and see if there's anything she's interested in. Thanks!

haven't read the other comments yet but the chromebook is basically a netbook running chrome OS. i have one, it's great, but almost every element of it requires the internet to be useful. almost all applications (ie skype, steam, etc) aren't chrome OS compatible, either, so it's more or less just taking it how it is. unfortunately she's going to get the most out of it with internet; otherwise she's a bit SOL in the meantime. sucks that she doesn't have net access, but yeah chromebook is def net-heavy.

That's what I'm hearing, yeah.

Thanks, I'll let her know.
