Love Actually: Yes or No?

(Anonymous) 2013-12-18 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
I just found out this year that some people adamently hate this movie, but I kinda grew up watching it and always thought it was pretty close to perfect.

I honestly cannot answer that question. I've seen it like a dozen times probably but I'm not sure whether or not I actually like it.

I like it overall. There are some characters I don't like, but hey, there are like six or seven different story lines. The majority are good.

Love it.

Yes

(Anonymous) 2013-12-18 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
It's not perfect but I find it a lovely movie and some of my favorite scenes.

Is it possible to like/dislike every single one of the eight or nine plotlines in the movie? Or do you mean just...like/dislike overall?

I love it. Yes, there are moments that make me cringe. I love it regardless.

Love all of it except the guy with the cards.

I really enjoy it myself, it's silly and fun.

Love Actually Question

(Anonymous) 2013-12-18 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
So... did the cheating(?) dad (Alan Rickman) get back together with his wife at the end? I guess I can appreciate ambiguity, but Emma's reaction was so wonderful that I wanted some resolution to that situation.

Additionally, the American woman's story didn't have a happy ending, and that makes me sad. I think she had a problem (emotionally relying on her mentally disabled brother, not understanding boundaries and basically enabling him by coming every time he wanted her to), though she was really well-meaning, and upset me that she didn't get the guy in the end. :(

I thought yes, since she said 'it's good to have you home'. (I thought her speech to him was awesome, yes.)

And another yes - i was sad for her, and also kind of mad at him for giving up so quickly. But she needed to stop answering that phone *every time*.

No. The plots I disliked outweigh the plots I did.

Which ones did you dislike, if you can remember? Just curious!

Man, I remember disliking most of them. I think I liked the nude stand-ins and the Alan Rickman/Emma Thompson one? The ones I really didn't like was the Hugh Grant one and the love triangle wedding.

Haven't seen it in a while, but I do enjoy some of the storylines.

I watched it for the first time about a week ago, and I liked it. It was cute.

God, I STILL haven't seen this, and I keep telling myself I will. It has Rick Grimes and Martin Freeman and Colin Firth and Liam Neeson, right? I've mostly heard good things about it, but I'm sure plenty of people hate it and have valid reasons for doing so.

Yes! And I do believe it has mostly positive reviews, and kind of a... Christmas cult following, if you will. Not invalidating people who dislike it, but I like basically everything about it. :) I watch it every Christmas and it still makes me smile.

I've only seen it once. I hated the Alan Rickman/Emma Thompson segment so much I haven't watched it again. Some of the other segments aren't that great either. It's always touted as this "feel-good" Christmas movie and it's really not.

Mixed feelings. I dislike the one with the guy who has a crush on his best friend's fiancee/wife, it just felt like it was trying to sell me on the romance. A guy who is cold and standoffish to you because he can't get over his crush, but still wants to film creepy video of your wedding AND disrupt your new marriage with his declaration of love is an asshole.

Some of the stories just make me sad. The Alan Rickman/Emma Thompson one is heartbreaking, though I loved them both. The one where the office worker's relationship with her mentally ill brother cuts her off from having her own life is also depressing as hell.

I didn't quite HATE it, but I was profoundly disappointed because I'd heard so much good about it. Emma Thompson & Alan Rickman were great, and I loved Bill Nighy. Colin Firth's storyline was acceptable. I was "meh" to Hugh Grant's storyline. I despised the storyline with Liam Neeson and his stepson.

But overall, the film didn't work for me. Just too much. Particularly when the music score is soaring along, trying to make me feel good about that dumb little kid running past airport security, and - I don't know, that whole piece just about ruined the rest of it for me.

It's like somebody put too much sugar in the recipe, and the souffle ended up collapsing inward.

I dunno about all the hate, but BEWBZ

The movie itself was fine, but I have to admit I was annoyed that the office couple didn't work out.
