I haven't seen the second movie and liked the first well enough, but let's be serious now, these Hobbit movies are no LotR trilogy. They're like an underachieving sibling, except somehow managing to feel even longer to watch.

I think they're more pointing out that people had lots of negative thoughts about the Lord of the Rings movies and a lot of the complaints sound the same?

Nah. The complaints about LotR were nitpicky and purist-centric, because let's be honest those were some damn fine movies, whatever flaws they had. The complaints about the Hobbit are mostly from people who liked the original trilogy and think this new "franchise" is a bloated, unnecessary cash grab that could have served its purpose better as a condense oneshot or two-parter.
