I agree fwiw.

But I think the reason it's that way is because, for the majority of the viewing public, she's the one who's strange and abnormal.

I like you OP. You disagree with a major plotline of the show yet you are still happy with the show and calm about the thing you don't like.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-19 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
I agree. It's quite refreshing on an internet where a lot of people seem to get angry about something they don't like and argue that it's wrong, wrong, WRONG.

Secret 2 - Bones (TV series)

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-12-19 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
[Picture is Dr. Temperance "Bones" Brennan, as portrayed by Emily Deschanel, and FBI Special Agent Seeley Booth, as portrayed by David Boreanaz, from the TV series "Bones". Bones is a woman with light skin, gray eyes and medium-length brown hair. She is wearing dark green clothing. Booth has light olive skin, short brown hair and brown eyes. He is wearing a black suit.]

Not Secret: They are still one of my favorite fictional couples. Even after they got together, the chemistry is still there.

Secret: I wish they hadn't married. As much as I want them together, it feels out of character for Brennan (like much of her characterization the past few seasons). Why can't Booth ever change for her? Why is she the one who always changes who she is?

Secret Because: This is not a popular opinion in the fandom. And I still am a fan of the show. I'll keep watching even if I dislike a lot of the current season.

To be honest I stopped watching a few episodes after they got together, mostly for that reason. I didn't realise they had gotten married, bit :/ to discover that.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-19 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
I stopped watching when I found out the actor had cheated on his wife. Just couldn't think of him as a good guy anymore. Strange what different things drive us away or let us drift away from things we used to love.

I am not sure if I'd stop for the same reason (I don't really follow actors, although I have dropped books because of authors) but I can see why some would find it enough reason.

This has reminded me about Castle, I used to enjoy that. I'm going to go see if it's starting anytime soon again.

I'm not overly thrilled about the marriage either (though a lot of my beef stems with the way it happened and my characterization-grump is more about Angela than Brennan).

But I do think that there are things Booth has changed/given up in order to be with Brennan too. Sure, she's become more free with her emotions and yes, she wanted to have a marriage/"real" wedding because Booth wanted it...

...but he's also been shown to be a pretty devout Catholic. And despite that, he still lived with/had a baby with Bones without being married. He was willing to wait (and not pressure her) for Bones to be ready to ask for marriage. Heck, it turned out he was willing to marry her wherever the hell she wanted, even if it wasn't in a church with a priest.

Okay....that's all that's coming up off the top of my head. I just don't know that I think the change is overly one-sided.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-19 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
Except Booth had sex with every woman we saw him with on the show. And he already had a kid. So he clearly didn't consider those parts of Catholicism part of his personal faith.

I guess you are sort of right. He has changed somewhat. But the show has still gone out of its way to portray his perspective as the right one. He's proven right time and time again. And Brennan has changed a lot more, and her perspective is more often portrayed as the wrong one.

I thought his son he had when he was married? (I don't know, they like never show him anymore, it's easy to forget he HAS a son and Christine wasn't his first kid.)

I get you on that second part though. That is definitely a theme.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-19 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
No. He and Parker's mother never married. He proposed after Parker was born, but she turned him down.

He may not have pressured her, but he had make pretty clear before that things not going his way was a deal breaker for him.
If Bones hadn't changed, sooner or later he would be "rightful angry" about her not wanting to marry.

Or maybe not, because everyone's characterization doesn't seem to matter anymore and who care about coherence in that? But still, he never reacts well when he isn't in the right and just because he was patient with Bones doesn't change that.

That's a good point, I hadn't really considered it like that.

I agree. I'm getting really irritated by how the show keeps framing his (conventional, conservative) views as correct, and Bones as the one who needs to adapt and change. And mostly I'm just frustrated by the inconsistent quality of the writing and characterization.

I quit this show about mid-season three in utter disgust and i'm sad to hear that they're warping Bones' character so much. That's really too bad.

Was it the pony episode by any chance? That was the one that broke the camel's back for me - that they had Brennan, who's a bloody anthropologist and so, I presume, trained to observe and analyse people's behaviour without applying moral judgements to it, agree that basically any sex that wasn't missionary position with the lights off was Bad And Wrong just put the final nail in the show's coffin as far as I was concerned. Plus they had every other regular character agree with that too! Booth, I could see it from, given his Catholic background, but the rest of them not so much.

Ah, man. THAT episode..... I don't remember, really, except the whole 'Zack is the apprentice to the serial killer' thing made me want to heave and it just....

Yeah, stupid, yucky, ooc and just.... Meh.

Ah, must have been later than the pony episode for you then - I only heard about the apprentice serial killer thing from reading episode guides after I'd stopped watching. And hearing about it made me all the more certain I'd made the right decision. Bah.

I didn't even make it halfway through season one because I despised Booth so much. I liked everyone else, but that guy was a dealbreaker for me. Everything I've heard about the show since then has made me glad I quit when I did.

I started out liking him, as there were some good moments between him and Bones about his sniper past and his son, things like that.... And then they just kept dumbing him down and making him more sanctimonious (and apparently just letting 'Booth' be 'David') and.... It just started to suck really hard.

Meh.

No I agree with all of this. they still have great chemistry and I even think her having a kid is in-character for her (her earlier discomfort was due to her fear of ending up abandoning her child the way her parents did. it's why she took christine with her when she and her dad left after all that bullshit with Pollant).

But the marriage thing? Nope. That is so un-like Brennan. She was ADAMANTLY against the institution of marriage and mostly due to it being so immersed in Christian rhetoric nowadays. And she was SO against wearing white....and then what happened? FUCKING. TRADITIONAL. WHITE. DRESS.
So fucking pissed off about that. B/

I hope this is the last season. they got them hitched pretty early , so I hope this is a "lets wrap it up" season and be done with it.

I could justify some of the stuff she did, mainly the kid (though her not being on birth control of some sort was out of character...), but the marriage bit really burned me.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-19 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I stopped watching sometime in season 6, mostly out of boredom, but even back then, I was pissed about how much Brennan was changing so they could eventually hook her up with Booth. And everything I've heard about the show for the past season or two has made me glad I dropped it when I did.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-19 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)

Characters getting married in a long-running series is always a bad idea, IMO. They should save that for the very last season or even the very last episode. Once they're together permanently, where's the suspense? Where can the storyline go, from there? Nowhere but babies.

I dunno, I just think that a wedding is the most cliched and gimmicky thing that a TV series can do. It's a blatantly desperate ratings-grab.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-21 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
Temperance Brennan is one of the most sloppily written great characters I have ever seen on television. It's like the writers can't be bothered to remember one single thing about her from one episode to the next. Her relationship with Booth had so much potential to be interesting, but I had to bail on the show when it became clear that nothing Temperance cares about was ever going to be treated as important.
