The actors are really what saves his writing. Because, yeah, his writing isn't so hot. His problem is he thinks he is so clever. And usually writers who think like that never are. It's the writers who have self doubt who write good scripts. Who go back over and over to make sure everything lines up and all the characters fit with there overall personalities that are good. (Mind you, you can have too much self doubt. That will lead to never finishing anything in the first place.) But you must need a bit of self doubt to be any good at the creative process.
