I think his joke was creepy and unfunny and I am against rape jokes in general. I also like his Bilbo and think he seems fairly cool otherwise. Now can everyone on both the pro- and anti-sides remember that these are not incompatible statements?

I'm more annoyed at the people going "who cares" though.

I think my point of view is, yep, it was a shitty, dumb joke. Where do we go from there? What else are we supposed to do? I think that's the sense in which I would say 'who cares' - yes it was shitty, but once we've acknowledged that, what else is there?

Boycotting his movies, Protesting around his home and work place, get up in his face and force him to KNOW he was wrong. Something other than the "Meh rape isn't such a big deal" bullshit you're advocating.

He made a joke. It was a dumb and distasteful joke that I wouldn't have made, but he didn't actually rape anyone; he made a rape joke. And I'm sure that he would agree that rape is wrong. As I do. Now, I agree that there's a connection between rape jokes and a culture that often abets and ignores rape, and that's the thing that he should recognize - but I don't think equating rape jokes and actual rape is a constructive way of approaching that problem. And I don't think that any of the things that you're advocating here would lead him to a nuanced understanding on this topic, and I think that there's something disproportionate about them.

"Rape isn't such a big deal" = an idiotic interpretation of this situation.
"Rape jokes are bad but not a big deal" = more accurate.

I am against rape jokes, but I'm not going to think someone who makes one is the devil incarnate. Call him out for it? Hey, I think that's fair. Equate him to a rapist? Fuck off.

Acknowledging it is enough for me. More than I expect from most people anyway. I don't really know where to go from there either other than explaining why you think it was bad to people who don't get it.

Just acknowledging it, saying, "That's shitty," is all you need to do. Public opinion kind of matters for celebrities.

SO much agreement for your last sentence. Obviously some people care. And the fact that he immediately did an air quote around rape made my skin crawl. But I do like his Bilbo and I'll keep watching The Hobbit so.

Basically I agree with this whole comment.
