See, I'm not bothered by the wasted potential because I'm inclined to give the show a chance to prove that it's not wasted potential. I'm also inclined to give them benefit of the doubt that it won't be another random love story.

As for being smarter than Holmes... Mycroft is a successful businessman and owner of a Michelin-starred restaurant and there have been fairly strong hints that there's more under the surface we're not being shown yet. Holmes is newly out of rehab and crashing at a building owned by his father. Mycroft may not have Holmes' talent for crimesolving, but "average guy next door" doesn't really describe him too well.

Like the OP, I'm cool with waiting to see what will happen before I gnash my teeth and wail about wasted potential and everything being ruined.

I'm still pretty sure that nothing shall make Step Nine a good episode, but actually, you may have a point here. Seeing as they wrote a nice denouement to the whole Irene-Moriarty plotline, it is plausible to think that something of this sort shall happen to Joan/Mycroft. I may yet give it a chance, anon; this was not so much my true opinion of the series as my bitterness speaking.
