You're right, it's a terrible hat.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-21 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
It is more of a gadding-about-town-being-a-dandy hat than a Wild-Westing-gunfighting hat.

Mag 7 secret! That hat is terrible, though.

Ezra has the best hat.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-21 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
Ezra has a very fine hat indeed. I myself am a little bit partial to Vin's...something about the floppiness appeals to me.

And the man under the hat, of course, but then all the main characters on this show were wildly attractive to me.

all the main characters on this show were wildly attractive to me.

Oh yes. Not as much Ron Perlman for me, but all the others, definitely.

His voice covers a multitude of sins. A good voice is like catnip for me, I get practically hypnotized lol.

He does have an awesome voice. I can get sucked in by a sexy voice too *looking at you, Clancy Brown* I think I was so focused on the other guys that even the voice fell by the wayside ;)

Magnificent 7!!! There's a blast from the past. I loved that fandom while I was in it. Then I kinda drifted away and when I decided to check it out again, it seemed like it had become All About Ezra. So I didn't stay. But good memories anyway. :)

(Anonymous) 2013-12-21 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
Ezra is the fandom darling, but there's lots of good team!fic too. I love me some good team fic ^^

(Anonymous) 2013-12-21 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, there was a lot of great team fic. And AUs! I've never seen another fandom like it for AUs. I'm just not much of an Ezra girl though (though I did make exceptions for a few writers), and it seemed like the LJ portion of the fandom was very Ezra-focused.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-21 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
The AUs are remarkable, so well organized.

Ahhhh, I never was much on lj, that might explain it. I got most of my fic through ff.net and blackraptor.

What impressed me was how well-researched a lot of it was! The show has a great mood and atmosphere, but in the details it was somewhat lacking, haha...the fans more than made up for that. I actually learned some stuff reading Mag7 fic, wonders of wonders.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-21 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
I spent most of my time in the fandom at Blackraptor and Lady Angel's Library and a few other sites but those were the two big ones that I remember. That was before I was on LJ though. The LJ section of the fandom was pretty different. Not bad, just not what I was interested in.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-21 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
And you're right, some of it was amazingly well researched.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-21 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
I tried the fandom on for size, and it didn't work, and it's because Ezra is the fandom darling. Ezra was okay in the context of the show, but I can't stand fandoms that take the morally bankrupt character and try to redeem him so hard in fic. Avengers and Loki-apologists, I'm looking at you. Ezra's a racist jerk in the series, and he uses people, even his friends. He lies all the time and tries to steal one widow's land while he makes a bet on finding a way to sleep with another widow, that's barely touching all the things he did, but every Ezra fic is about how he's secretly a good guy and philanthropist and trustworthy and every bad decision he made in canon is his mother's fault. Don't get me started on how many Ezra fans hate or fic-bash the one black character on the show, Nathan, because Nathan called Ezra on his bad behavior in the series. I guess this made Nathan 'uppity.' Sorry for the rant, I didn't know I was still angry about this, but as a POC I took it hard when I found out so many Ezra fans have the same viewpoint, and they go to great lengths to rationalize it AND those viewpoints show up in their fic. Fuck that.

OP, I wish there had been more JD fic when I was looking, because even though his hat was dumb (sorry, JD), he was a very good character.

Secret 5 - The Magnificent Seven (TV series)

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-12-21 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
[Picture is the cast of the American western TV series "The Magnificent Seven", and then, on a separate image, J.D. Dunne, as portrayed by Andrew Kavovit. They're all wearing old west-style clothes, but J.D. is the only one wearing a bowler hat instead of a western hat. Also, his suit is fancier.]

He's my favorite character, but his hat REALLY annoys me (to an unreasonable degree). [Arrows] Look at all the other fine hats he COULD have had... I've even saved and edited some fics to remove references to it (which is SUPER lame). I'm sorry, JD, I know that's the hat Bat Masterson wore, but he was wrong and so are you.

Oh, I really liked this show.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-21 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
It wasn't a great hat, you're right. However, there were a few points to the hat - 1) everyone had a slightly different hat, a sort of shorthand for the character (along with the rest of their wardrobes) and JD's was meant to set him apart (newbie, East Coast, not quite right), 2) the Bat Masterson thing, probably meant to emphasize his youth and naivete, 3) he needed a certain sort swagger to pull something like that off, which he didn't have, but then he wasn't supposed to (they may have meant for him to grow into or out of it, but we didn't get that far)

Hey, it's a Magnificent 7 secret! Funny story: I first heard about this show through a really fun LJ discussion about whumpfic, specifically You'll All Be Sorry (YABS) fic, where the writer has all the characters treat one character like shit for some flimsy reason, then have that character go through horrible experiences and misfortunes and torture and misery while believing all his friends hate him/hiding his misfortunes because he thinks they don't care, and then have all the characters feel horrible when they find out what happened to him and realize how wrong they were to treat him like that, and welcome him back with loads of apologies and groveling. This used to happen to Ezra in fanfic all the time. :)

/cool story bro

(Anonymous) 2013-12-21 05:03 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL! That's most of Ezra-centric fanfic in a nutshell right there!

(Anonymous) 2013-12-21 03:33 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, the bowler is period correct for the show. In the US, it might have been a bit of a fancy hat, but in the UK where it was invented, it was for factory workers to protect their heads. Sort of a safety hat.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-21 05:11 pm (UTC)(link)
OMG, a Magnificent 7 secret! I agree with the nonny who said the hats were shorthand for all the guys. The hats for Buck the ladies man, Josiah the ex-preacher, and Nathan the healer, were the most nondescript. Still different but nothing unusual. Ezra had the gambler hat because he was a conman-gambler, Chris Larabee had the legit gunfighter flat-brim (and the long, black coat to go with it) because he was a hella fast-draw, Vin had a cavalry hat because he was a hunter-tracker, and JD Dunne's hat was that bowler. Very city slicker, that kid, with delusions of wild west grandeur. But even Buck told JD to 'get rid of that stupid hat' more than once. :)
