I think the Rankin-Bass version of The Hobbit is awesome. And the songs are really lovely. Some of the songs from RB's version of Return of the King are also really nice, even if the movie itself is... um... yeah... ~_~

Is this music from the cartoon movie? I remember getting the movie from the library when I was younger. It was creepy/eerie but also awesome at the same time.

It's not like the Rankin-Bass Hobbit is really obscure and unknown. It's a popular adaptation by a major (in that era) animation studio, of a mega-famous source. Most of my friends grew up with it in the animated canon, and we were all born around 10 years after it came out.

You are not alone! That Gollum has terrified me for life. I still occasionally have a nightmare featuring him, and I haven't even watched that movie in at least a decade.

The live action version of Chip the Glasses just sounds wrong to me after growing up the animated version.

Secret 8 - The Original Soundtrack of The Hobbit (Rankin/Bass animated adaptation)

[Picture is the cover of the album of the original soundtrack of the "Rankin/Bass" animated film version of "The Hobbit". It features Bilbo, Gandalf and the Company of Dwarves on a mountain-y place with the dragon Smaug looking fierce some ways ahead.]

After seeing the new movie I was hit with nostalgia and decided to give this another listen. I forgot how great the songs from this version were. I wish more people knew about it!

Gollum is also on the cover. And the cover shows Smaug as green, but he's reddish brown in the movie.
