I'm sorry to be that one person, but ommmg their faces look so stupid?? This is some... weird art, OP.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-22 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
It doesn't look that weird to me? Very cartoony, but not weird.

But maybe I'm just used to Foglio's art by now.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-22 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah, for me it's hideous D: at least the color helps, without the coloring this would look ugly to the point of mockery

at least in this particular picture. is it a particularly bad example? do they only look that ugly in profile?

(Anonymous) 2013-12-23 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
No, they look like melting Precious Moments figurines from every angle.

Oh god, this.

Noodle has been trying to get me into this comic for ages and I just can't.

saaame

I keep hearing awesome things about this webcomic but I can't get past the faces long enough to check it out

(Anonymous) 2013-12-22 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Ha, my first thought was, holy shit, the art is so bad, especially her face...MUST COMMENT -- aaaand you beat me to it!

(Anonymous) 2013-12-22 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Phil Foglio's cartoon style is really hit-or-miss for some people, and the single most common complaint I've seen about it is how he does faces.

I like Girl Genius, but I have friends who have a definite love-hate thing about it-- love the story, hate the art.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-22 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I never gave the comic a chance for years because the art was so ugly to me, but I recently gave it another try and the story is so good that I forget the style isn't my thing.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-23 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
I just don't understand how you can draw human beings that regularly for that long and never learn to draw consistent faces instead of just throwing melty fried-egg features onto potato-shaped voids every single time you have to show a face.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-23 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Omg this comment is awesome. Anon please take a look at Rob Liefield's "art" (if you don't know him yet), I would love to hear a description of that from you.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-23 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
More than the faces (which I find ugly, I won't lie) what I found most disturbing it's his arm. It looks like something really painful is going on over there.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-22 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't see how Gil could be into Tarvek or vice versa, but whatever floats your boat, OP.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-22 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, Tarvek at least seems to be weirdly attached to Gil (of course, Tarvek being Tarvek, that could mean any number of things, romance being only the least important). It's harder to tell with Gil, especially since he's been kind of crazy for the last while, but he at least seems to tolerate Tarvek being in the same orbit as he and Agatha now, which is a lot more than he'd have done previously. And they've always had a bit of potential-for-hatesex vibe between them ...

Kismesis is a thing.

If you look at it a certain way, this is tons of sublimated sexual tension!

What makes you think they aren't?

OP

You ship it, don't you?

That makes me disproportionately pleased for reasons that I can't fully articulate.

Secret 8 - Girl Genius (comic)

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-12-22 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
[Picture is a panel from the comic "Girl Genius", showing Agatha? standing behind a red-headed man, both of them looking regretful. The man says "We could have kept him safe", to which Agatha replies "I'm sorry".]

I'm a very monogamy-oriented person. I don't get stupid and judgey over other people being poly, but it's not something for me, and it's not something I've ever really enjoyed in fiction. Until this panel. Now I have a One True Threesome.

(But only as an equilateral triad, not as a V. Gil and Tarvek have to be into each other, too.)

Re: Secret 8 - Girl Genius (comic)

(Anonymous) 2013-12-22 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
yup, that's Agatha. The man is Tarvek Sturmvoraus, and the 'him' in 'We could have kept him safe' is Gil Wulfenbach, the other leg of the OT3.

Thank you! I will correct this on page 2.

Is it wrong that I look at that and wonder what happened to Foglio's art style? I used to buy his additions of the Myth Adventures! comics way back when, and I swear his style was a lot cleaner then.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-23 07:12 am (UTC)(link)
Same here. I used to love Myth Adventures. What the hell happened?

(Anonymous) 2013-12-23 07:13 am (UTC)(link)
I even named my cat Tananda.

I have no actual OT3 except that one. And, honestly, given the way Gil and Tarvek act around each other, it wouldn't be that much of a push for them to become romantic. They're clearly more important to each other than they let on.
