They said they insulted the character and the fans of the character, which includes the OP.

I mean, it's not like they're insulting some intrinsic part of their identity (I'm not trying to overstate this whole thing), but they can still get upset about it. It's still an assholish thing for someone to do to insult people just because they happen to like a character that you don't.

Yes, exactly. And beyond that it's a moronic generalization that illustrates pretty clearly that that person is a gigantic butthole. Maybe it's just me, but my MO in that situation is to laugh at them and take them off my friends list.

For me it depends on the character. There are some that I love because I really identify with them and I take it too personally when people insult them and the people like me who like them. I can admit that I probably shouldn't care so much, but that's just how it goes. I can sympathize with other people who react the same way.
