I don't think a lot of people know what gen is now. I'd say they get it confused with 'gen-the-rating' but it still doesn't explain the amount of explicit slash stories that are marked gen on AO3. Maybe they think it counts as gen if someone in the fic doesn't have sex? IDK.

It isn't just slash either, I've searched for gen and been met with het and femslash stories. I wish people would tag properly.

True. I don't know why people insist on ticking the gen box. At least half the time they're wrong.
