(Anonymous) 2013-12-23 03:52 am (UTC)(link)Ah yes. I've mainly seen it in Sherlock Holmes in Ritchieverse, where certain people seem to take deep offense to this concept of an alternate universe based on the stories with its own timeline and alternate takes on personalities, relationships, events, etc. WHAT? A "CREATIVE INTERPRETATION"? YOU MEAN YOU'RE NOT TRYING TO EXACTLY COPY THE BOOKS? BLASPHEMY!!!! IT'S TOTALLY NOT LIKE WE'RE CONSTANTLY TALKING ABOUT HOW MUCH OF CANON MIGHT BE WATSON TOTALLY LYING, OR LIKE WE'VE INVENTED FIVE GAZILLION DIFFERENT FAR MORE RIDICULOUS INTERPRETATIONS OF WHAT ~REALLY~ HAPPENED!!!!
(Though OTOH I'll admit I'm totally in sympathy with the canon fans who resent BBC Sherlock fans because of how much BBC fans try to claim that BBC is ~just like canon~ when it's...not.)
And oh my god in superhero comics it's all over the fucking place. Like, people storming in whining about NO HDU MAKE BRUCE AND TONY FRIENDS HAVEN'T YOU READ WORLD WAR HULK and just...facepalm. And this is coming from someone who read the comics long before the MCU was a thing. At least in Sherlock Holmes you might think "well, maybe these people have never heard of the concept of an alternate universe," but superhero comics have no such excuse.
