I know! 99% of the time the person in the middle of the triangle is an insufferable jerk, mostly because they're the ones stringing this fiasco along by being unable to choose. But do fans ever pick on them? Noooo, especially if they're a dude. He could treat them both like crap but fans will still hate one of the girls for being the 'cause' of all the trouble.

Augh, yes. Though more of the triangles I've personally encountered have been boy>girl<boy, but then what always happens is that one of the guys is a jerk and one is sweet and she ALWAYS picks the jerk. I swear I don't get it. The only love triangle I didn't hate was in Macross Frontier (ignoring the movies, they don't exist). I was astonished that for once, it was clear that the guy was truly torn between the two of them, and each girl "completed" him in a different way, while at the same time, both of the girls were excellent characters in their own right, and neither one was vilified or turned into a shrew for the sake of drama. I also found the guy to be relatively sympathetic, unlike usually where, like you say, they just come off as jerks.

For one, I don't remember that they particularly added much to the plot. But I especially didn't like that (unlike the anime) they resolved the love triangle. Personally, I really liked the lack of resolution in the anime, because it underscored that a) there was a plot outside the romance, and b) Alto truly did care for both of the girls, and was simply too screwed up emotionally to really be able to make an intelligent decision yet.

IDK I mainly felt that they added nothing. I'd rewatch the series, but I wouldn't bother with the movies.

I rather did like the rather open ending of the television series, though it was obvious Sheryl was going to win the love triangle. It was obvious when she and Alto were heavily implied to have had sex in one of later episodes. That and she's super popular. I really wished they'd gone for a threesome end or a Ranka/Sheryl end but that's just wishful thinking on my part. Might give tge series a rewatch then and ignore the movies.

Agreed! I just loved the ambiguity we were left with, especially since I loved both Ranka and Sheryl. It was just nice to be free to imagine the continuation, even if like you say it was heavily implied that he would go for Sheryl. I just thought it fit his character better, too.

Happy watching ^^

I used to joke that Alto chose the sky over Ranka and Sheryl, because seriously, he totally did. And it fit his character so well. Alto/Sky was clearly the winner in the television series. I love both of them to bits as well and that's another reason I liked the ambiguity. That way there were no broken hearts.

Thanks!

Yes! And it's so rare that I actually like all "angles" of a love triangle, too. The thought of one of them getting their heart broken just makes me sad.

I can get behind your Alto/sky headcanon XD

Ditto!! I'm the same way. My headcanon is that while Alto was busy being in awe of the sky, Ranka and Sheryl were totally making out behind him. I'm only half-joking. I always thought Ranka had a crush on Sheryl.
