Christmas is almost over! THANK YOU, BABY JESUS!

I hate how every year it becomes more and more commercialized. Everyone fighting each other in the stores for stuff that a week after Christmas morning, they toss in the back of their closet and forget about it.

You know, the more I think about it, the more I think there's a lot of parts of our current society that really fucking suck.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-24 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
That just means you are getting old! Soon you will be complaining about how you don't understand technology.

You sound like the people in Miracle on 34th Street and that was made in 1947. I don't think it's a new problem.

Or maybe I just have that movie on the brain since I watch it more than I should every year.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-24 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
It's not a new problem but it's gotten worse (not OP for reference)

There is no "more than you should" when it comes to Miracle on 34th Street".

Hear, hear. I almost had 3 people back over me in a parking lot because they couldn't be fucked to look/wait and see if anything was in their way. OMG OMG OMG RUSH RUSH GO GO GO GO GO.

I just wanted a heating pad for my gecko. Not, you know, death.

I went out shopping yesterday (not for christmas things, I just needed to get out of the house) and customers were being so rude to people working. Bleh.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-24 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh. I heard some awful stories from a retail worker getting screamed at by jerks on the phone who were demanding to know why X toy/item was no longer in stock, despite the fact they knew it was available weeks before.

I like Christmas, but I can't wait for the 26th, when these idiots will mellow the fuck out and stop clogging up the main drag at all hours of the day.

Wish me luck, I'm going shopping on my lunch break and I hope the line isn't too long to make me late back to work.

Considering it's the eve here.

but I do not like the giant focus (and social pressure) on getting people expensive gifts and the obligatory "you must go to some kind of event on christmas day". I mean, I like getting my friends and family presents...but xmas sure takes away the joy in it :/ and my wallet.

My family is too big and I have too many friends :(

I like the events and small things either side.

Why would you thank Baby Jesus? He's the one who started this whole mess.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-24 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
Nah. It was the people who looked at his birth and thought, "Hey, I can make a buck off of that."

(Anonymous) 2013-12-24 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
This. If people want to celebrate the birth of their god, more power to them.

If people want to pile on the greed and cruelty, and claim it's in the name of a god who actively spoke against those things, then there's a problem.

Not just actively spoke against it, but flipped tables too!

(ノಠ益ಠ)ノ彡┻━┻

has Christian connotations/origins?!

The basic story is that Jesus went to the temple one day to find a whole stack of traders and money-lenders making money off selling and trading sacrifice stuff. He got annoyed, started flipping tables and drove the money-lenders out. Afterwards, people who serious wanted to worship could do so in peace.

So yep! There's a Biblical connotation!

And it's been like that for weeks, like it started getting worse right around Halloween... and since Thanksgiving, I have not been able to go to the store for anything, or travel down the main roads in town, without it being a huge ordeal and taking forever. :/

(Anonymous) 2013-12-24 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
That's really clever! I've never heard anyone talk about Christmas that way.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-24 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
Hahahahaha. Pretty much my thought. Thought #2 - you can celebrate the season however you choose, nonny. Just because other people are acting in a certain way doesn't mean you have to.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-24 05:29 am (UTC)(link)
I agree it's a drag, but it's also easily avoided. You can avoid major stores in December, and you don't have to give any presents at all. You can choose to have a small, meaningful celebration and invite whoever you want or nobody at all.

But I notice that people enjoy complaining about the commercialization of Christmas rather than, actually doing anything about it.

+1

+1 to the part about giving no gifts. Our family stopped buying presents for each other because we're a large family, it was a hassle and a financial burden for some. We could not enjoy Christmas more now! It's taken the pressure off, and it's back into a family gathering time. Come together for Christmas dinner, visit and catch up with each other. So much more enjoyable.
