which bands do you picture when someone says goth music?

In related news, I finally saw The World's End last night. It made this The Sisters of Mercy fan squeal in delight.

I know this is completely incorrect, but: Evanescence.

Not really a genre I'm a fan of or familiar with.

Concrete Blonde. That's the only song I have of theirs, but it's the epitome of 90s goth.

And Creature Feature. My favorite from them.

Stuff from the 80s that sounds like other kinds of stuff from the 80s to the point where I really don't see the difference between "goth" and "not."

The Cure, Type O Negative, Marilyn Manson, in order of era. I think at some point around 10-15 years ago "goth music" gave way to the emo scene which was basically the same fashions but with indie rock rather than punk, metal or industrial.

There's a big subset though of romantigoths who listen exclusively to Nightwish and the like. Those are still around, though not as much as they used to be 5-8 years ago.

Cruxshadows, Voltaire, Bauhaus, the Sisters of Mercy, Malice Mizer and Dir en Grey. (In no particular order.)

Joy Division, The Bauhaus, and Sisters of Mercy are probably the first that come to my mind.

After that it would be Lacuna Coil, Mila Mar, Marilyn Manson, The Cure, NIN, and other bands that might not necessarily be strictly 'goth' but were still influential (to me or to the genre/scene as a whole). The kind of music I listened to when I was still heavily involved in the scene, I guess.

Black Sabbath? I guess they could fall under a number of categories.

Cradle of Filth.

Evanescence, ThouShaltNot, Voltaire, The Birthday Massacre, Rasputina? I always have a difficult time judging what genre a song or band is unless it's very obvious.

Nine Inch Nails, even though that's wrong.

Also the Cure but that's almost entirely because of Achewood
