I am getting the distinct impression you have never read the fifty bazillion fanfics positing that Watson actually decked him and shouted himself hoarse after finding out that he got put through all that because Holmes thought he was a bad liar, and just neglected to put that scene in the story he published. ;)

I mean, even if he didn't actually do it, he certainly had the right to.
