I was always so baffled by the title change, especially since it makes more since that it be called "philosopher's stone" since the philosopher's stone is an actual legend. Even Rowling said she really regretted agreeing to have the title be changed for american publication

I saw a talk given by the American editor once, and according to him, it was Rowling's choice to change it from "philosopher's stone" to "sorcerer's stone." He wanted to change the title to Harry Potter and the School of Magic, which is a perfectly fine title that tells you what the story is about and doesn't involve screwing around with the text at all.

I would have gone with "The Magic Mirror" or anything at all really. The Magic Puzzle, The Mysterious Object etc etc etc it's not like the titles are fancy!

Harry Potter and the Thing that Did the Thing, with Magic.

Problem solved. You're welcome, Scholastic.

She wanted to keep the title being about the Stone. That was what the central plot was about.

Harry Potter and the School of Magic

yeah, but that could have been used as the title for just about all of the books (except maybe the seventh, since most of the action was actually away from hogwarts in that one)

according to Rowling, "They changed the first title, but with my consent. To be honest, I wish I hadn't agreed now, but it was my first book, and I was so grateful that anyone was publishing me I wanted to keep them happy...". Can't really blame her, if it was between that and "Harry Potter and the School of Magic", I would have definitely jumped on "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" even if it was still an unneeded change.
