Changing it does miss a teachable moment, though. Putting in a short preface explaining the differences with regard to the most common words and/or adding a quick footnote definition here or there would be better IMO. That way you keep the integrity of the original and the kids get to learn those words. They're going to run across word and spelling differences in other versions of English eventually, so why not early on?

This. Kids aren't dumb; they're more than capable of learning things. Hell, I read The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings when I was nine and there were all sorts of words I'd never heard of in those, so I just looked them up and ended up learning something from it.
