The bitch of it is, British publications "translate" American works all the fucking time. (Seriously, read an interview with an American celebrity in a mainstream British publication: 90 percent of the time, you'll find at least one alleged quote that appears to have been rephrased to match British word usage.) But Brits aren't constantly told they're the dumdums of the International stage the way Americans are, so nobody throws a fit about it.

I agree it's largely unnecessary on both sides, though things like jumper v. sweater or whether a set of TV episodes are a series or a season have enough potential for confusion that you may as well clean them up.
