Whereas theoretical and experimental physics are topics the audience is dying to hear more about? Because we hear about them quite frequently!

On the other hand, Penny doesn't demonstrate much interest in theater or acting beyond the odd audition here or there. She demonstrates no passion for it, and never indicates more than a superficial interest in it. You could argue that is simply poor writing, but I don't think you can reasonably argue that Penny's commitment to her own intellectual pursuits exists strongly, yet she never says a word about it.

She took acting classes. That's seeking education for her intended field--if she can get technical training outside of a degree I don't really see why it's so smart for her to invest two years into community college when she wants to act, and can take acting classes without being in college.

I think bothering to take classes for acting indicates an interest in it beyond "I can go to Hollywood and just be pretty and become famous!"

I thought it was kind of the point of the show to target people that are interested in such stuff.

The US economy has much more viable future prospects than many economists fear if a plurality of TBBT's audience really has the STEM background to make head or tail, much less take any pleasure in, the stuff the guys spout :-)

I actually find the sheer alienation of all that science-babble (all the more so for knowing that it's apparently the real thing) kind of enjoyable. I thoroughly regard myself as pretty clever and very geeky, and yet the show is constantly wrong-footing me and forcing me to identify with the ditzy blonde - and her insecurity and visible attempts to convince herself that she totally doesn't care, and it's not like she wants to know any of this anyway, and she's smart in other ways, sure, and yet still feeling dumb. I mean, there's something just delightful in that momentary twist of identification.

(plus, all those times when you say "I could listen to X recite the phonebook"? This really is pretty much it with Parsons.)
