Isn't Sherlock Holmes (or at least the earlier parts of the canon) public domain, though? You don't need permissions if the work in question is no longer copyright protected.

Well that just means this particular fanficcer has even less of a leg to stand on then. The moral point stands though, once you start playing with other's toys then you have no grounds for complaint if someone else plays too.

And of course the prime directive of the internet and world wide web is that "once it is out there, it is out there".
