If you have any feedback about how the Secret Santa was carried out or suggestions for any improvements we can make in the event that we run this again, do let us know here! And with that all said and done, we hope you've enjoyed your Christmas and that you have a great New Year! :D

Posting fic/art

I think most recipients were okay with their gifts being posted. Most of us post to AO3, I believe, so I wanted to know if there was a tag we wanted to use so the fics/art that came from this exchange can be grouped. (Because I want to see what other people wrote, especially.) I was going to tag my fic 'Fandom Secrets Secret Santa 2013.' Anyone who knows how grouping things from fests can weigh in here especially, because I only know a bit about tagging, etc.

Also, thanks to case and error (and any other organizers) for setting this up! It was fun and I hope we can do it again next year.

That's a good idea. I think you can actually make it a collection? Like Yuletide does. IDK

Yeah, that's something we're discussing now - not for this year's SS but maybe next year's instead. There's still some debate about whether it should be on AO3 or DW, but a collection online with tags will probably be a thing if we do this again. We'll also probably include an option where when people submit their gift they can choose if they want it to go up on the collection to be public on release day or if they want it to only be seen by their giftee.

Thanks for the suggestions!

da

Can we use a tag for this year, in lieu of a challenge/collection thing? I could ask support on AO3 if that's okay with them.

Thanks for all the hard work putting this together. It was a lot of fun. :)

I have a couple suggestions for next year. I think that giving out assignments earlier would be a good idea since a lot of us also participate in Yuletide and other holiday gift exchanges and many of us are students or teachers whose December is really busy with school. (I realize this first Secret Santa wasn't even thought of until late in the season so this is totally not a criticism of this year's timeline.)

The other suggestion I would make is that it would be awesome to post the fandom gifts in such a way that everyone can enjoy them. The number of participants was fairly small (although that may change in the future). It would be relatively easy to create a community with moderated posting where people could post art, fic, etc. and then everyone could enjoy the fic (the mod could post for people who don't have/want dreamwidth accounts). Or if you want identities to remain secret for a time, several sock accounts could be given posting access to the comm and names could be edited after the reveal (this is the way remix used to do it). I would be happy to help moderate such a comm. :)

Thanks for the suggestions - I've also responded to fingalsanteater about them and you will probably be seeing a collection on DW or AO3 or whatever we come up with sometime next year (probably not tumblr, though). It's a good idea. And we can probably try to start it some time in November as opposed to December as well to give people more time as well.

For the modding thing - it's nice of you to offer but we'd prefer to have as few people modding it as possible. This year's SS was pretty managable, and as long as there's no surprise influx of like 200 people joining the current team can probably manage. Fewer mods = more potential participants, since it'd be unfair for the mods to join as they could do things like assign themselves people they might like or read through their gift before the official reveal.

I totally understand. I just hate criticizing and then not offering to be part of the solution.

As far as the other part of your comment goes, obviously mods should do whatever feels comfortable and right for them, but I'm almost 100% sure that the mods have participated in every fic exchange I've ever done (including the biggies like Remix and Yuletide), and I have never heard of any wank about a mod participating in the fest. Just food for thought. :)

Thanks for the offer, but you don't have to feel like it's something you need to do.

And yeah, we know about the mods thing in other fic exchanges, it's something that was discussed. Ultimately we decided that we'd prefer filling in as pinch hitters or making last minute placeholder gifts instead.

Most of us that are mods aren't really involved in fandom either, so it's not an issue! We all do like fandom, we're just not really too active in it, so this works out for the best.

Thank you guys for putting everything together! Since most of what I wanted to mention have been said already, I won't repeat them. One suggestion if we do start in November next year - might it be possible to have at least the general secret Santa assignments sent out a week before Black Friday, to take advantage of possible discounts?

Also, I noticed a few people mentioning how much difficulty they had in finding gift cards that were within the recommended price ranges. Will it be possible to have a resource post of sorts, a list of e-shops other than Steam/Amazon that have products within the price range?

Happy holidays to you too! <3

Sure, the Black Friday thing isn't a problem. In terms of 'buying stuff for other people' we did want to keep it a bit limited this year, though we might change how that's done now that we've seen how this went.

Could also put together a more comprehensive suggestions and resource post as well, that wouldn't be an issue.
