What time period was this? Because I remember a lot of chatter about it in the early part of this decade.

Yeah, I'm thinking late 90's and early 00's. I really haven't been into anime since 2002/2003-ish, so before then. Probably around 1999 or 2000. I feel old.

Ah, seems about right. I think it was in the '01-'02 timeframe that people talked about it. I remember it because that's when I got in to anime, and it was one of the names I always heard.

It might have still been popular at that point. My interest was waning by then, though. I think that was when that first wave of mainstream attention happened and a lot of series started getting lost in the bustle to translate everything ever made and its mom. I got into anime around 97 and its name was being thrown around for sure within a few years of that. Man, this is surprisingly fascinating.

I remember the first MAJOR wave happening in '03 or early '04, and anime getting "mainstreamed" in maybe '05-ish. I do remember that I got into it before it was really a "thing." I recall being soooo excited when our Waldenbooks upgraded their manga section to include multiple shelves, MULTIPLE SHELVES! :D Because I was so used to it taking up three tiny rows under the graphic novels. ^^;

Where I lived, it was definitely earlier than that, because it happened when I was in high school and I graduated in '04. Even in '01 and '02 (possibly earlier), my Borders had multiples shelves of manga and Those Kids hanging out in the aisle and scaring off the casual fans.
