Nah. His fans are just able to show (when contacting him personally) how stupid and passive aggressive they can be on a website many people use.

Everything has the fair share of fans who don't google/check FAQs; not everything has a tumblr that actively answers these questions. If every single fandom/person in fandom answered questions over Tumblr, I'm betting this kind of thing wouldn't be out of place.

This is so true, I swear I always get the same questions on tumblr and they're all about things I've covered on my blogs. I don't answer all my asks publicly because otherwise my followers would have to see the same question/answer over and over and over again.

Secret 4 - Neil Gaiman (writer), Sandman (comic)

[Picture is a tumblr post by the writer Neil Gaiman, answering a question by the user "zarmyn".

Zarmyn asks: So um, Mr. Joseph Gordon-Levitt just mention something about a Sandman movie with you involved... Does that mean you're actually allowing it to really, truly happen this time?

Neil Gaiman answers: I don't get to allow or not Sandman adaptations. When I was 26, and I signed the Sandman contract, it was as work for hire. DC comics (now DC Entertainment, part of Warner Bros) own all of Sandman, including movie and TV rights, and always has done.

Like you, I've seen the tweet from Joseph that says he's a producer on a SANDMAN movie. He's a fine actor and a smart director, and a really nice man. Like you, I'm interested in seeing what happens next.

(There have been producers, and writers, and directors before on Sandman movies & TV series during the last 18 years. So far no movies have been made, although we have escaped a few bad ones.)]

I think he's got some of the dumbest most passive-aggressive fans I've ever seen.

[arrow at the question] What the fuck?

[arrow at explanation of ownership of Sandman] 1) The Sandman ownership issues is in his Frequently Asked Questions.

2. Asking if he's "actually allowing it" is practically accusing him of legally blocking a Sandman movie.

(A real fan would/should know better.)

Being a fan doesn't mean knowing everything about the creator of the work. Being a fan of a work doesn't even being a fan of the creator. Plus, at one point the Daily Mail had a bunch of "articles" about him suing to stop a movie being made. Nothing was true beyond him saying he thought the adaptation would be terrible. I can see how easy it would be for someone who likes Sandman, especially an American who doesn't know the DM, to think NG really blocked production.

Now I really regret not buying that Sandman boxset for $50.

Maybe it'll be there next year for me.
