None of the fanfics I'm following have been updated in months...this is not normal. A lot of them update seldomly, but I never get a full-fledged drought of all of them at once :(

Awe, I'm sorry to hear that, anon. I'm kinda in the same boat. So I'm rereading some of my favorite fics at the moment.

Probably because of school. The WIP I follow stopped updating in September and just now got an update.

This is why I don't follow WIPs. Though, I accidentally started a Merlin WIP I didn't know was a WIP because it's broken up into stories. Apparently their are going to be seven books and the author is on book 5. I'm in too deep I so now I'm following two WIPs.

I read one last week that I didn't realise was incomplete, hit the latest chapter and realised it hadn't been updated in a few years. The author is still active but doesn't seem to answer questions on the status.

I was :( at it

There's a fic I like that's exactly like that. I know the author had plans for the rest of it, and they are still active in other fandoms (and the same fandom on occasion), but they haven't said if they plan on finishing the fic. I almost left another comment the other day to ask if they were going to finish.

It's frustrating. Especially since the AN on that last chapter talked about their plans for it - then nothing. For a couple of years. I was going to comment but noticed they had hundreds of reviews over the past few years asking what I'd ask so...

I wish I had noticed it wasn't complete. I tend to avoid WIP fics (or book series and tv series)

You've got it better than I do. There's a series I loved back in 2005, and I reread it a while ago because of this drought, and it actually isn't too shabby. At the very least, it isn't so juvenile that I'm pulled out of the story, and that's high praise for something I loved when I was 14. The author stated in 2009 (after four years of silence) that she was not planning to finish the final installment, but it only just occurred to me the other day to try and contact her and ask for a brief summary of what would have happened...

And that's not even mentioning the story that was updated fairly often until April 2006, when it suddenly cut off right in the middle of the climax, with no word from the author even now.

There are a lot of other, more recent dead ones on my list that I periodically notice, and go "oh yeah, it HAS been two years...man, I hope they come back, but at this point, who can say?"

I can never bear to follow WIPs for this very reason. A fic has to be really good (or for a really rare pairing) for me to follow a WIP. I'm sure it's just because it's the holidays and it was finals time for a lot of people before that too.

Oh that sucks, if I were you they'd all be blurring together by now. I try to avoid WIPs but somehow I'm invested in a few anyway. One of them is an anonymous kink meme fill that hasn't been touched in six months. I refuse to lose hope.

Well, school + holidays = fics tend to slow down this time of year. As far as I know, that's actually how and why a lot of big bangs schedule themselves - art and fic are completed throughout the times the fandom base usually has more free time, then posted at the end of that period so during the fandom's lowest activity point, people still have a lot of stuff to read. :)

Also, might want to check the fics individually and/or check your account settings for the sites their hosted on. More than once I've found a slight change in my account settings led to me just not getting alerts, or some glitch in the side itself led to me not getting alerts for an updated fic even when more has been added.

(And I've also found cases where people don't add a new chapter but merely "edit" the existing fic/chapter to add their latest updates - they don't realize that sites only alert subscribing readers for new content, not for editing content, even if the edit is new content - this is rare, but it has happened).

That's why I stopped reading WIPs. I hate waiting and there's always the possibility it'll never get finished for whatever reason.

I think that is why I usually don't post the first chapter until the final has been written.

Yeah. I haven't written anything long enough that I'd even consider breaking it up, but if I did I'd want it finished first.

I'm kind of experiencing the same feeling, but with TV shows rather than fics. I only keep up with 3 or 4 currently-running shows right now, and they're all on hiatus, but my brain is doing that thing where it realizes it's been about a week since it got an episode of X and starts expecting a new one... So I'm definitely feeling you on the "drought" sensation.

Fic-wise, I only have one WIP series I'm following, but in the fandom I'm currently fixated on, I've pretty much read all the good fic and most of the mediocre fic I can find, and there's no more. D:

I'm pretty much down to the dregs and the fics I normally wouldn't read (AUs mostly) in the fandom I'm fixated on right now, so I feel you on the no more. There's still some stuff that looks good that I haven't read, but wow, I really went through fics fast. I think I've read over 2 million words of fic in this fandom, at the least, in the last three weeks.

o_o Impressive. But yeah, the dearth of worthwhile fic really kind of makes me look forward to when my interest swings back over to the MCU -- the sheer size of that fandom should ensure that it's a lot harder to run out of stuff I'm interested in reading. (Honestly, being in a fandom that huge has kind of spoiled me for when I latch onto smaller ones. Where's all the fic? Where are all the readers? Where's all the comm activity? D: My expectations are so skewed.)
