I don't think you're necessarily supposed to "root" for anyone, it's just telling what happened and why. That was a completely broken family from every single angle; not acknowledging Sam's sexuality was just the icing on the cake. What she did in order to run away might have been wrong, but I do take a bit of exception with "repairing her relationship with them", because I don't honestly believe that was her responsibility anymore. There wasn't really much of a relationship left to salvage in the first place.

I felt like the story was about how family isn't always home, and Sam escaping a poisonous atmosphere by any means necessary. Lonnie was certainly a convenient way to do just that-- even though it's impulsive teenage behavior and realistically it wouldn't work out.

This, though I like to think they did have a good relationship [but that could just be wishful thinking on my part.]

Ah, I didn't phrase myself very well; I meant that the whole running away thing realistically wouldn't work out. I did think their relationship seemed solid, and very sweet.
