So I'm not really doing anything for New Year's and it sucks.

For the past few years, a friend of mine hosted New Years' and it was always fun. She's doing something else this year - which sure, I understand, but when I started looking round for other options it just seems that everyone of my friends has become a bore or is cocooning or whatever.

My friend whom I used to celebrate with in college is now cooped up with his partner & family. My best female friend says she'll just stay home with the dogs and go to be at 9 because she's so tired lately and I'm like WTF.

I mean, I'm not angry at any of them individually, but is this what growing older is like? It really sucks.

I am not doing anything either! The saddest part? New Year's day is my birthday!

That is indeed double sucky :(
starphotographs: I like him. He kind of looks and acts like one of my characters. (I did not know this when I started liking him!) (Victor (...>:|))

I don't think it's an "older" thing, just a bummer holiday thing. It happens some years and it sucks. LOL my last three Halloweens.

Holidays have become such a fucking bore in general. Especially Christmas.

Yeah, I don't know what I'm doing. A lot of my friends just aren't going to be around for one reason or another. I have a few tentative plans but they're very up in the air.

the thing is that, in itself, I don't mind not going out on New Year's. I don't have any positive associations with the night and I don't expect to have a good time. it's just one of those times when you feel you have to do something.

I work until 11:30 this year so yay! Bringing in the New Year right when I get home from work! Avoiding drunks on the way home!

I think it's a mixture of things - growing up, people changing (regardless of age), and it just not being a "good" time. I agree it sucks when traditions change, but... maybe you can find a compromise, even if it means an early-ish night in?

I don't think it's so much an age thing as just not caring as much anymore. When I was 21, NYE was a great party excuse. At 29, I didn't much like partying anymore and NYE became the one party of the year. At 40, I can't stand the thought of getting dressed up to stay out late surrounded by loud, obnoxious drunks because I've been doing it for a couple decades and it's lost its shine.

I guess that sort of it, though. I do still want to go out, get dressed up and go out late. Maybe not with drunks, but the general sentiment still appeals.

I never do anything for New Year's because I'm boring and enjoy being home browsing the web or playing a game more than drinking or socializing.

However, for others? Yea, I think the shine eventually wears off for some people, and the idea of partying isn't as exciting anymore because you've been there and done that.

It's definitely not an age thing. One of my friends is throwing one of his usual crazy parties with tons of booze and a giant bonfire, and he turned 40 this year. XD

I probably won't go, except maybe a little right at the start before people are drunk, because I don't drink and I'm an introvert, but I REFUSE to go to bed before midnight or just stay in. Especially after working years of 3rd shift retail where I had to ring in the new year by... locking the door and mopping the floor, then selling cigarettes to all the happy people on their way home from wherever fun place they were at midnight. My city has had a fireworks display downtown every year, and a couple years ago they added a ball that drops from above city hall, and that is where I'll be. :D

If you're not much of an introvert, why not go partying alone?

After years of trying to convince my friends to do anything interesting after the "family" part of the celebration was done, on 2012 I said "fuck it all, I'm going clubbing" and had a grand time. Granted, it would have been better with my friends, but it was still awesome compared to staying holed up at home as it happened this January 1st. (I was going to party with my Best Bro and he stood me up after a series of unfortunate events that meant he reached Downtown, where we live, at 4 am.)

IDK if my friends will be up for it (I suggested a plan, but they don't seem very enthused about it) - but I already bought a ticket to a LGTB club that will be hosting a party for New Years. If they can come, cool. If not, well, whatever, I still can have fun :3
