There's no indication of that, though, is there? Besides the fact that he's capable of murder, of course, lol. I thought he just wanted to be a king and have a kingdom, but maybe he really did care about helping poor people?

uh he says so himself to anna that he's been setting himself up as "the hero thats going to save arendelle"
they arent going to put someone (especially a foreigner like Hans) on the throne, but by taking care of them under his Nice Guy persona, they might be inclined to. It would have been stupid of him to be outwardly evil during the few times we see him. He wants to be king and rule a kingdom, and he kind of needs people in the kingdom to do that.

His lines in the "love song" center around how he's "been searching my whole life to find my own place", whereas Anna's are about how he's paying her attention and he's attractive. The cynic in me was going "Okay, both of you have problems" at that point, so I was enthralled when the twist came. Suddenly it made sense.

Anna was "nothing like he'd ever seen before" (a naive chump), and "Love is an open door" (of opportunity for him) to "Find his own place."

The fact that he checks to see where the chandelier will fall before deciding to knock the assassin's bolt off-course is a little suspect on repeat views, as well.

That's what I figured. But what I can't suss is why he stops Elsa with the "don't be the monster they think you are!" line. I mean, I guess he really is just a fantastic master manipulator to always seem empathetic to anyone, but at the same time, wouldn't it have made more sense to just let her kill those two guys, then he has to kill her because clearly she's "evil?"

Almost Human, anyone?

Maybe he's the sort of manipulator who doesn't like totally pointless death? I mean, obviously he's okay with murder for his own ends (see Ana and Elsa), but he didn't risk anything with letting those two guys live. Everyone's the hero of their own story, so maybe he's vying for the throne because he genuinely believes that he can do a good job at it, and thus he wants to preserve life where he can.

That, and it's a guard against everything going wrong. Elsa has clearly outclassed them at that point. If he's seen (at least by her, not to mention the other guys thundering up the stairs behind him) as trying to appeal to her better nature, the way a good ruler should, then if everything goes belly-up, he has a shot at coming out on top anyway.

Keep in mind that he doesn't know how much control she has over her powers and has no reason to believe that she won't kill HIM after killing the assassins and it makes more sense.

My headcanon is that he's a sociopath.
