I'm not speaking for you. I'm not speaking "for" anyone. I'm just telling you a basic truth about a group of people who happen to make rape jokes without ever committing rape.

I'm sorry if you went through an upsetting experience, but it gives you neither right nor reason to generalize in such an odd manner. Your arguments do not become more convincing because of your trauma.

The thing of it is...the one group who's convinced that everyone is a rapist, is rapists. And when people who haven't and wouldn't rape make rape jokes, it makes rapists think that it's normal and gives them confidence that there won't be consequences for their actions. Which, sadly, often there's not.

So no, Martin Freeman may not be a rapist. But he may have accidentally made the world a bit easier for them, and that's not something I see him having wanted to do if he'd thought it through.

I am pretty sure there is a big group on Tumblr who thinks that all men are rapists. I can find quotes if you want. THis means....THOSE PEOPLE ARE ALL RAPISTS!

SA

Way to miss my point there. I did not say that everyone who thinks that way was a rapist, just that most (maybe even all) rapists think that way. There's also a huge difference between someone -- probably a woman, probably a survivor -- making an unfortunate generalization about a group they're not part of and a rapist thinking "I'm guessing that most people are willing to do this because I AM."

I don't think that's what they're thinking since it's, you know, a crime.

I already said this downthread, but I do not believe that, unless people live in a really toxic, problematic community, they should take such cultural tendencies into account. There are too many topics that are in this or that way associated with some harmful part of our culture. Jokes about rape aren't the problem; rapists are. Jokes about murder aren't the problem; murderers are. From hearing rape jokes to raping someone is a hell of a way to go, and, if somebody did that, chances are they could be provoked by any other trifle.

this. if there were any connection between joking about something and actually doing it, my coworker would've murdered my boss at least a dozen times by now.
