Wait, so they literally asked him what life was like wrt race relations where he grew up, and he answered them truthfully about what he saw and experienced, and what he saw and experienced was basically that the poor black people and the poor white people got along okay. Yes, clearly he meant that segregation should be reinstated.

He assumed people who are not complaining must be perfectly okay, without considering the things that happened to the people who did complain, during a time when did not have equal rights. Because he didn't see it, he implies it couldn't have happened. And it's downright laughable that he would think a black person would ever complain within earshot of a white man about white people, pre-civil rights.

Yeah, that was my thought. That just because he didn't hear "black folk" complaining doesn't mean were happy with their lot in life. It just means they were smart enough to keep their opinions to themselves with people they weren't sure they could trust.
