F!S Feminist quote of the day

Male supremacy is fused into the language, so that every sentence both heralds and affirms it.
Ms A Dworkin

Settle down, dude.

Dworkin is an insult to feminism. Please don't associate her with us actual feminists. It's embarrassing.

Feminism exists in it's current form because of Dworkin and her peers and contemporaries.

You might not like her or agree with her (Which I personally think say's more about your commitment to the cause than anything else) but she is a vital part of feminist history, and her work for feminism is the reason why you have the freedom to be able to call yourself an "actual feminists".

or is it that, no, you alone with your... how many years of college gender studies classes do you have under your belt? Well however many that may be, that's clearly enough that you alone can decide who is a "True Scotsman" Right?

Piss off.

Yeah, I don't really have a dog in this fight (seems like you do?), and am no fan of Dworkin et. al., but the No True Scotsman factor in that comment rubbed me the wrong way, too.

Saying crazy shit doesn't make you not a feminist, or not an... Well, anything else. It just makes you a person who subscribes to a certain ideology and spouts crap.

(Actually, this is a big part of why I don't identify myself with ideologies. No matter what it is, you're bound to be affiliating yourself with at least a few assholes.)

ayrt

Feminism exists in it's current form because of Dworkin and her peers and contemporaries.

Exactly. You're totally right. And feminism, in its current form, is not taken seriously, assumed to be anti-men, whiny, shrill, trivial, butthurt, superfluous, unimportant, indulgent frivolity that people only agree with to "shut women up" or because it's "proper", and therefore being unfeminist is cheered as being a sign of being a free spirit who isn't bound by decorum or society's rules. Because feminism, in it's current form, is seen as a bunch of nit-picky whining, not an honorable moral movement against tyranny and oppression like Civil Rights or even Gay Rights.

Yup. Thank a LOT Dworkin. Thanks a fucking lot. I'm so fucking grateful to you for it. Feminism has done fuck-all to be taken seriously because of you, but at least I have your stupid, insane, paranoid, pity-party writings to let me feel morally superior. Thanks SO much.

I said "Feminism exists in it's current form
not "Feminism is precieved in it's current form

I don't give a faster-than-light shit about how misogynists see the feminist movement, and if you think their dislike of feminism is because someone you don't agree with wrote a bunch of books you don't agree with to help women, then you're a moron. They dislike feminism because someone, anyone, wrote a bunch of books to help women

Men do not hate feminism or dismiss the movement as [all of what you said in that very long misogynistic paragraph] because of Dworkin. They hate and dismiss feminism because they don't want to relinquish any power they have over women. If you could time travel back and usurp Dworkins place in feminist history, substituting her words for your own words, then jump back to the present, you will find that their reaction to feminism has not changed. They don't care which feminist says what, they only care that any feminist is saying anything.

And you're bullshit "Feminists are the reason why everyone hates feminism" bullshit is playing directly into their hands.

Take the word semester. A perfect example of this school's discriminatory preference of semen to ovaries. That's why I'm petitioning to have next term be referred to as the winter ovester.

I'm reading that as ove-ster, which just sounds like some kind of gimmicky toaster oven thing that would have a really bad infomercial.

I'm pretty sure they actually made a product like this. Cooked eggs alongside your toast. Total waste of money, but I would have at least chuckled if it was named the Ovester.

Legally Blonde, right?

It's possible this isn't as silly as it sounds in context, that in context it's clear she's talking about some particular subset of sentences.

It's also possible this sentence came out in the middle of a long argument or essay, when she'd really warmed to the subject and got a bit carried away with her rhetoric. You know how in the heat of an argument you sometimes overstate your case and say stuff which, when you actually think about it, is really stupid? I do.

Or it's possible she really believed this rather silly statement.

Alas, I am too lazy to look it up and find out just now.

I didn't know Dworkin had a female form. But then he was a shape-shifter, the crazy old coot, so I suppose if he wanted to run around the Shadows establishing feminist movements for his own amusement there wasn't much stopping him.
