Actually, it's awareness raising that has helped social movements forward... increment by increment, person by person. I know my history... do you? I've seen fandom change for the better since that godawful racism wank... now trying to not being a jerk is not incredibly
fringe any more. (Yeah yeah I know there are extremes... seen that in undergrads at uni.)

You might be oblivious and apathetic but it's by raising a fuss in the first place (which feels so pointless and effortful and exhausting and even risky or illegal at the time) that moves society forward. Fandom might be an online microcosm but people are still being made to think and even a small bit, change.
