Only...they didn't? It's just very very subtle (to contrast with the Blatant Obvious Villainy of the Duke. Who may have been a Blatantly Obvious Badguy, but who was more stupid than malicious, especially when it came to actual matters of life or death). As folks point out, all of his lines in the song, which does come entirely too early in the movie, are about him finding his own place. Animated musical or not, having a guy propose to someone he's known for an hour or so should set off warning bells, it just doesn't, because if you couch something in Obvious Romantic Imagery we tend to shrug it off.

It probably is a good lesson for girls to learn. Not that you can't trust people, but that there's something to be said for going slow and finding out who someone is.

"Do you even know his last name?"
"Uh duh? Of the Southern Islands?"

Not only that, but often domestic violence occurs in relationships where the man has been "perfect" until it starts. It is very possible not to show that side whilst trying to get someone hooked in, otherwise violent men wouldn't get married and established, the women wouldn't stay. Often it starts after marriage, or after pregnancy. So I think it's a very good lesson for girls. Sometimes you can't predict these things, there isn't always foreshadowing.
