If anything, he was making a reference TO THE ORIGINAL SOURCE MATERIAL, in which Bilbo steals the keys from a drunken Elven guard in a way that is pretty uncomfortably dub-con-ish itself. If they had put that in the movie, instead of having the Elves get drunk of their own accord, then things would have been a lot simpler.

My girlfriend, who is a rape survivor herself, asked me to put that she thinks going nutso over the whole thing is ridiculous.

That's awesome that your gf doesn't care about it. Some survivors do care, some don't. Doesn't make anyones reaction any more or less valid.
