I know what "conservative" used to mean, kthx. So let's throw that assumption about my intelligence out the window right now.

So... someone who watches movies avidly, but only one sort of movie... actually isn't watching movies avidly? Someone who enjoys videogames (either Halo or Final Fantasy or whatever) to the point where it is basically their fandom and they spend a lot of their free time on it... aren't gamers? Honestly, I've never, ever seen that definition of gamer before--that you have to be well-rounded in your enjoyment of genres in order to qualify. Tell that to the boys on WoW or my best friend who plays nothing but Halo and stood in line all night in order to get his copy first. Tell that to all the kids that spend their entire afternoons in arcades wasting all their money on fighting or driving games. The rant you seemed to take issue with was me talking about the traditional definition of gamer, but at the same time, your own definition isn't one I've ever heard, really. So who are you to decide what someone can correctly identify them as?

Your opinion, of course, but... it just seems like an incredibly odd definition to me. One that really isn't accurate with the "world" of gaming as the members of that "world" understand it. Myself, I tend to skew heavily towards first-person shooters and fighting games myself, but I really don't think what "type" of games you tend to like have anything to do with your status as a gamer. Especially, in a case like this, as a "girl gamer" which is a stupid label, anyway.

I'm not assuming anything about your intelligence, dude. I'm just citing an example.

I don't tend to be personally anecdotal when in any kind of debate or opinionfest, but I worked for two years in a videogame retailer and had more than the regular person's exposure to the community at large. On that note, I'm not claiming to be an expert or anything (though admittedly sociology is sort of my college major).

I'm not saying people who stick exclusively to one genre are not playing videogames. I'm just saying that to identify themselves as "gamers" is a falsity. Gamers, as I've always known them, are people who not only don't limit themselves to a single genre, but keep up with gaming news, participate in active discussion about videogames (as a whole, not fandom), etc.

As simply as I can put it: Playing videogames =\= being a "gamer", in most circles.

So... if you don't keep up with political news, participate in active political discussion... you can't be democrat or republican?

I always thought "gamers" were ... people that played games. Kind of like ... uhhhh, minorities are people that are non-white, whether or not they are more than one ethnicity or keep up with news or participate in active discussion about being a minority??

I guess you just have a different definition of "gamer" than most other people?

Maybe it's my exposure to thousands of more mainstream customers than in the general internet fanbases, or maybe it's more regional, I don't know.

You're drawing comparisons that don't make a lot of sense, though (race etc really isn't applicable here dude =\). Like I said, I'm not talking about general observation of someone and their hobbies, I'm talking about the personal identity label as a gamer.

Some people play some games, and some people are gamers.

As far as the Dem/Repub goes, though... I'm from the land of Dixiecrats, people who used to vote Democrat because, among other issues, Dems used to be the party of racist fucks. As you know, that's completely reversed on itself in the modern era. If you were Dem sixty years ago and haven't kept up with a damn bit of politics but still support based on old labels, then no, you're NOT a Dem anymore (and the same holds true vice versa and or many other political evolutions).

This is sort of contradictory because my earlier argument was based on personal identification rather than general observation, but in that particular case an exception is made.

What circles are these? The circles you are a part of and know? It's quite different for me and basically everyone I've ever known. So, sorry, I don't think we're going to agree here. Not sarcasm, by the way, I just genuinely think we're at an impasse, here. I can only talk so much about my anecdotal evidence, and you can only talk so much about yours, but in the end... hey, I don't think our opinions are changing.

For the record, I worked at EB for quite some time as well, so maybe we have more in common than we think. Huh.

Oh yeah, I'm not trying to sway your opinions or anything. I was once told never to say my opinions are fact, but to present them as such.

But yeah, everyone I've talked to (including my roommate, who's worked at both a GS six hours away and my old store) tend to agree with me, so I suppose that's that. It might also help to clarify that I'm talking about people who go out of their way to identify themselves as "gamers" and not just a physical description of someone's hobbies.

I worked at a different chain The Monster That Is GameStop hasn't bought up yet (but give 'em a year jesus christ). It's always interesting to find other ex-employees.

Maybe it's a regional thing or something. Anyway, I think my entire point got lost in everything else, but my original line of thought was basically that asking people "why are you insulted?" isn't totally cool, especially since you seem to acknowledge that it's an opinion thing..?

I don't see why so many people are insulted that someone doesn't classify them as something they believe they are. The wording of the secret, at least to me, seemed very much like she was bitching about her personal friends----not fandom as a whole. Not even by extension.

I tend to find fandomsecrets goers to be pretty thin-skinned and on the occasion LOOKING to be offended. That's why I asked it. =\
