I just realized that Mirror of Erised is Desire spelled backwards. I feel so incredibly stupid and slow, it's not funny.

I'm sorry, I know it's unkind, but... that's really funny. Just because the book was released so long ago - in some ways I think it's more that you never would have heard someone mention it in all that time, it just seems so unlikely.

It's okay though! I think everyone has those blind spots and weird little things they just never notice, it doesn't make you stupid or slow. These things happen. Just random little meaningless stuff.

Maybe they're a new-ish fan? Or they weren't in the fandom? Not all huge HP fans were - I've been surprised at some of the insights and/or questions non-fandom fans have had before, then I remember I only figured them out after about 87 HP forum threads, the Lexicon and "clues for the _____th book" websites.

I've been re-reading PoA, though, and I've spotted new things that make me wonder if they're actually insightful or just obvious to other HP fans. (Like Harry hearing Lily's death being an allusion to JKR constantly remembering her own mother's death. Did everyone else get there first?)

Oh yeah, that's fair enough, I didn't think of that.

I still think it's kind of funny, though. Not that it is in any way a failing of the OP, it's just kind of a funny thing.

Everyone gets those moments, OP. Nothing to be ashamed of. I have had a lot of moments like that myself, though I can't think of any specific instances right now. I just remember the blushing embarrassment I get.

I first read the Harry Potter books in Russian, and I thought that the name of the street on which the Dursleys lived (Privet Drive) and, indeed, the Dursleys' very surname were a cheesy product of some stupid translator's attempts at making the book more "Russian". Because in Russian, "privet" is "hello" and "Dursley" sounds a lot like the words "dura" and "durak" ("fool", feminine and masculine versions). And I was like, no, that's too cheesy. You should've preserved their original surname.

I thought their original surname was something like "Foolsons" or "McIdiots".

If it makes you feel any better, it took me a little while before I realized that the constant mentions of Finger Avenue in the Batman books referred to Bill Finger, the uncredited co-creator of Batman.

But, didn't they say so in the book? Man, it's been ages, i don't even remember....

It's cool. Until I was 22 I thought that a car with a black front bumper, when the rest of the car was a different color, had put the black bumper on there as a fashion statement. I knew that other car parts that didn't match the rest of the car were a replacement for a damaged part, and if I saw a non-black mismatched front bumper, I knew it was a replacement, but I never realized that a black front bumper meant a replacement as well. Until I hit some ice on the freeway and needed a new front bumper, and the one the shop found happened to be black. Then the little light went on in my head.

Don't worry, anon. It took me at least ten years to realize that:

-Ender's name is incredibly appropriate
-Diagon Alley is "diagonally" and Knockturn Alley is "nocturnally"
-and "Avada Kedavra" sounds like "abracadabra"

though the last one is excusable to me because I have an American accent, so it's AA-bruh-cuh-DAA-bruh to me, which sounds nothing like the AH sound Avada Kedavra has in it.
