Eh, they're the first gay elf/dwarf pairing, then? :P (I actually quite like it when special, one-of-a-kind things are made not-so-special or one of a kind, but that's just me after years of Mary Sue-heavy fandoms).

But they are quite endearing. When they first meet, there's some pretty funny back-and-forth banter, and they do actually spend some time chatting and bonding over shared interests rather than just being some esoteric "love at first sight" stuff. Nothing particularly romantic actually happens in the movie beyond a single (and slightly-delusion) confession of love from one of them - it's just a lot of built-up chemistry, so it doesn't feel forced. :)
