He was joking, ffs. Not that I have any sympathy for him, but it's pretty obvious he was totally joking.

Also, HDU imply Edward Hardwicke wasn't pretty! Well, yeah, he was old and stuff, but he had the prettiest eyes, IMO. And those white sideburns were pretty dashing.
