Oh, what characters have you been soured on?

Anders from Dragon Age: Origins, for a big one; my resentment of him reached the point where I had to blacklist all his biggest stans on tumblr just to keep myself from screaming at them. Kid Flash from Young Justice, and Impulse - the fandom's massive hard-on for speedsters who think they're funny made me perhaps the only person laughing at what happened in the last episode. Oh, and I was almost soured on Stiles from Teen Wolf until I determined not to ever read any fics with him in them, which basically meant not reading any fic at all, but that's a sacrifice I have to make in order not to snarl at the screen every time he appears.

It's a shame that fandom has soured you on those characgers. I'm not in any of those fandoms, but I knowwhat it is like when fandom sucks the joy out of something you like.

Yeah, I mean, it's hit-or-miss, sometimes fandom makes me like characters a lot more than I would have without it, and sometimes it all just goes so so wrong. Sometimes I'm not even in a fandom and I'm sick of hearing about certain people (hi, Loki/Hiddleston). Has that ever happened to you?

I've had both of those happen to me before. I usually lurk in fandom and even though most of my fandoms are older, but I've stumbled across vitrolic hate from years before and years current that made me appreciate and love characters I already loved even more. If that makes any sense. .

As for the second part, oh yeah, definitely. I've got a bad case of hype aversion to most of the pairings, shows, characters that fandom shits their pants over. SnK is one of them atm. I'm so sick of hearing about it.

It totally does, some characters I like only because fandom hates them so much (usually female characters, because they're the ones who attract hate for no good reason). Ugh, I'm so glad the SnK fever started dying down a little bit from what it was like a few months ago. It's one of very few shows on my "probably never watch" list because of the obsession (up there with BBC's "Sherlock").

Totally agreed on that. A few of those characters I liked only because fandom hated them, but I grew to appreciate and love them on their own. And most of them are female characters because fandom can totally be brutal when it comes to female characters. I do have a couple of male characters who I feel that way towards though.

The thing is I started to read Snk before anime came out and just sort of forgot about it. Then the anime came along and the fandom exploded and with it came all sorts of offputting bullshit that soured me on picking it up again anytime soon. I cannot agree enough on Sherlock. I'm getting tired of Sherlock Holmes in general.

i'm curious--what soured you on anders? he's someone i soured on too. i wouldn't blame fandom all the way for it, bc i enjoyed him in awakening and didn't in da2 and his stans were just the cherry on top, but i usually hear of it the other way around: people didn't like him but his fans brought them around.

Mostly the way his fans behave as if they can't like him without making every possible excuse and justification for his behavior in DA2. They can't just say "oh, he's a fucked up abomination but I love him anyway", it has to be "he's a perfectly reasonable and adorable woobie and everything he does is someone else's fault". And then a lot of them straight up ignore the fact that he's got a crazy Fade spirit manipulating a lot of his thoughts and actions because it interferes with their idea of Anders as their brave freedom fighter husbando instead of the broken-down madman with poor decision-making he really is. It's MCU Loki syndrome all over again, really.

no i completely feel you. i've had to pull out of da fandom entirely (at least on tumblr) except for reblogging art because i felt like at times they were talking about completely different characters than the ones in the game.
