(Anonymous) 2013-12-30 04:32 am (UTC)(link)because the best way to let everyone know your pet series' female characters are awesome is to talk about how superior they are to a similar series' shitty female charactersRe: nayrt
You can agree or disagree with that, but I don't think pointing out that a canon sometimes doesn't do well by its female characters is the same as saying that the characters are shitty. (Though obvs people who say that are embarrassing themselves.)
Re: nayrt
(Anonymous) 2013-12-31 01:20 am (UTC)(link)I feel like everyone, not just the female characters, got a bit stereotyped in the first anime. But it's most obvious, I think, in characters like Winry and Izumi when they get reduced to "damsel" and "mother" instead of the more well-rounded versions in the manga. Turning Havoc into a generic soldier, or flattening out Envy, Mustang, or Hohenheim's characters, doesn't have the weight (for lack of a better word) that messing with the female characters does.
Also, if you're curious, here's how the Rose thing went down - in FMA:First, soldiers invade Lior to "keep the peace" and succeed in fucking up the place worse than it was. Rose is active in taking care of people and feeding children and other such things, and gets a reputation as a community leader. Either because of this or by chance, her house gets invaded by soldiers. The scene shows her, looking terrified, faced with a roomful of leering male soldiers. Fade to black. Next time we see her, a significant time has passed, she's had a baby, and something traumatic has caused her to go mute. She's still taking care of people worse off than herself, is now seen as a kind of holy figure, and eventually recovers her voice. It's never explicitly stated that she's been raped, but pretty clear that's what the authors intended.
I have to agree with the OP in one case though - I've seen much more misogyny from the fans of FMA than from the creators. The hate people poured on FMA:First Winry for not being Manga Winry was downright scary.
