...I don't mean to sound insensitive, but the reason you puked was probably the antibiotic, not the vitamins. Unless you've been taking massive doses of vit D, there's basically no reason for interactions between most over the counter vitamins and prescription medications.

Next time try taking your antibiotic with food, and really? You should be glad you have a mother that is at least trying to take care of you.

Actually, quite a few antibiotics bind with certain vitamins, like iron.

And no, she should not be happy with what her mother is doing. It's dangerous.

Unless she's been offering prescription iron supplements (if that's the case, my apologies), there's not that much to be concerned about. I was assuming that was not the case and the vitamins in question were just your average multivitamins.

[personal profile] forgottenjester 2013-12-31 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
Iron was but an example. I'm on antibiotics right now and the pharmacist himself I could take no vitamins whatsoever with it.

Are you a medical professional?

Re: Holiday Ranting and Venting Thread

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2013-12-31 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
Yes and no. Am I a physician? No.

But since neither of us has a list of exactly what OP has been taking and no word on even which type of antibiotics they are, we're all just assuming here.

We are, but I wasn't the one who told [personal profile] nyxelestia to be grateful about her mother, who is obviously causing her distress, for forcing medication and vitamins down her throat.

imo, that's still better than having parents who are content to let you stay in your room without caring whether or not you might need to go to the hospital.

I suppose that depends on your perspective though.

Happy medium between those two extremes might be nice. I ain't holding my breath. I have been the adult in my family for as far back as I can remember.

It's really not cool to tell people they should be grateful, or act like you know better about their own life and how they feel.

Re: Holiday Ranting and Venting Thread

(Anonymous) 2013-12-31 09:22 am (UTC)(link)
Seriously dude, stuff it. Whether or not you have medical knowledge, let alone expertise, you are in no place to be telling someone they're better off with someone -- anyone -- insisting on medical remedies they do not consent to. Especially when they're not involved in the medical field at all.

Get off your damn high horse. It's the internet. There's no way either of you can know what's really happening, but at least forgottenjester's not coming along with a holy-than-thou attitude. Who knows why she didn't get better? Or threw up? Her doctor would better than any of us, that's for damn sure.

Concern: yes, great, and it makes you feel good to be thought of a cared for. But not being harassed with her very own under-the-bed pharmacy. It could even be worse, causing her persistent stress which further taxes her immune system, thereby preventing her from healing in a healthful, normal way.

Well my antibiotic is for a sinus infection. Vitamins have included iron, magnesium, zinc, C, and one other that I'm not sure, and some homeopathic cough syrup that tastes great but either does nothing or actually makes my cough worse.

Aaannd she just tried to give me a cough spray. She keeps insisting "it's tasteless, you won't gag at all" and not listening to me when I explain that something spraying on the back of my throat, regardless of it's taste, triggers my gag reflex (a little sensitive by default and crazy sensitive right now). Not taking it, but not appreciating her ranting at her boyfriend in the kitchen about me "blaming her for everything" that I can hear from all the way in my room upstairs. -_-

I'm so sorry. All of that sucks.

I do think that taking antibiotics with food is a good idea, though, if you're throwing them up. Just to be safe. I don't throw up when I take them, but they do tear up my lady parts, so you might want to also eat some yogurt each day to avoid that bit of nastiness. :)

Re: Holiday Ranting and Venting Thread

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2013-12-31 04:25 am (UTC)(link)
Will try to.

Though I am curious - what do you mean when you say they "tear up your lady parts"? I've had some bad experience with antibiotics and my vaginal area, but that was when I was like 9 years old. I'm having some completely unrelated problems right now (minor and intermittent), and now I'm worried the antibiotics will exacerbate those. :(

The use of antibiotics is associated with yeast infections because they kill all the bacteria, not just the stuff that's giving you the infection you're taking the medicine for. Eating yogurt can help prevent getting yeast infections.

Oh me too! For the same thing. Is yours a tetracycline? If so I may have some advice.

No, it's a penicillin (amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium).

Sinus infections everywhere, though. I walked into my last final exam two weeks ago and literally, you could not go for two minutes without hearing someone sniffling, sneezing, or coughing. I asked my teacher if there was anyone who wasn't sick and he was genuinely not sure.

[personal profile] forgottenjester 2013-12-31 05:32 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, well, the only advice I could give you for that is to eat with it. You don't need to but it's a good idea. Also, I generally drink a cup of water with the pill if I'm taking an antibiotic. *shrug*

Yeah. I had the same problem but my class was a group of kindergarteners who all wanted me to help with their gingerbread houses. All of them were very cute and very sick. 'Tis the season.

THIS IS WHY SMALL CHILDREN ARE ALL SECRETLY EVIL PARASITES OUT TO MAKE US ALL MISERABLE.

My mom is a teacher and childcarer, I established this opinion of small children as soon as I hit my tweens and I have yet to be disproven. :P THE CUTENESS IS A TRAP.

And thanks for the advice, I'll keep it in mind. :)

Ahahaa, what you say it true. It is a trap and I fall into it willingly.

No problem.

Stockholm Syndrome. IT'S THE ONLY EXPLANATION.

DA

Some of those "supplements" and "Chinese herbs" or "vitamins" especially the ones you get at the sketchier "whole foods" shops have either been shown to contain dangerous substances (like high doses of ephedra, in the case of the "harmless Chinese herbs"), nothing but filler products like plaster, etc., or other unlisted fillers that people may be allergic to; and in the case of "homeopathic" stuff, nothing at all (because those operate on the placebo effect).

The "health foods" and "alternative medicine" industries are not at all regulated like the drug industry is, in first world countries; and even those agencies slip up and miss things that fall through the net. So imagine that same scenario, only WITHOUT regulation.

That was why I didn't want to take them in the first place. When I needed some more iron earlier in the year, I felt much better after just taking in some foods with more iron than taking the tablets.

She takes so many a day, I'm going to try and compile all the incidences of recalls, analyses, frauds, and other shenanigans relating to vitamins and homeopathic medicine (especially if they're brands she uses) and show her. For years she didn't have health coverage to take care of some basic problems and has been relying on these to get her through them. But right now she has coverage, so I'm hoping to get her to a doctor so she can get a prescription vitamin - things that will have just what she needs, and be sure to actually contain what she needs. And probably in just one or two pills a day, instead of needing to take over a dozen every morning.
