tolkien spends so much time talking about elf hair in general but only ever mentions 5 members of one family with red hair in particular..

He writes a lot about royal families, though, and we don't know that much about more 'lowly' Elves in general, or the few who are mentioned are rarely described. I'd never really thought about it in depth before, but I'd imagine that while there may only be one notable family with red-haired people in it, red hair among Elves could be as it is among actual humans in Western Europe - rarer than any other hair colour but still not something especially exceptional.
