In the Tortall books, what happened with Jonathan and Thayet's oldest daughter, Kalasin? It's mentioned very briefly that she married the Carthak emperor, Kaddar, who was kind of a big deal in the Immortals books. Her brother Roald is featured prominently in the Protector of the Small books and a lot of time is spent on the progress celebrating his coming marriage, but Kalasin's name is brought up only once or twice. It seems like ought to be a big story line behind her marriage.

And seriously who the fuck is Cadence? Is she a crystal pony? Her hair looks like a crystal pony's hair and her cutie mark is their sacred crystal heart or whatever. Why wasn't she at the empire when it went off the map? If she was outside of the empire when it went down, why isn't she super old? Why is she an alicorn? Are alicorns born or made or both?? I DEMAND ANSWERS.

Kalasin was "staying with the duchess" in Kel's books, which I always took to mean she was in Carthak with an appropriate chaperone so she could get to know Kaddar prior to the marriage. But you're right, it does seem like there should be a bigger storyline there.

Cadence's backstory is gone into in a book called Twilight Sparkle and the Crystal Heart Spell; if I recall correctly, she was born a pegasus and was adopted by Celestia, and became an alicorn later in much the same process as Twilight does, albeit by defeating an evil unicorn witch using a hate spell on a community of earth ponies rather than by creating new magic. Her being so tied to the Crystal Empire isn't explained, but my housemates and I have a bunch of theories about destiny going on there.
