lol What. Atheism is pretty much the anti-shield. Religion has all those pretty god(s) and those pretty happy funtime farms where you go to exist forever in pure bliss. Really can't get anymore shielded from your own existence than pretending a skydaddy loves you no matter what you do, and is just waiting to give you a room in his skypalace of dreams.

Why are so many atheists so stuck on the idea of an afterlife? I hear much more about how supposedly comforting it is from atheists than I do from theists, which is interesting to me. I don't think about it all. It has nothing to do with why I like my religion. I just like having a socially acceptable imaginary friend.

I hear about it most from believers talking down to atheists. "Awww, y u no believe in heaven? That's so sad. :(" And I'm just like "nah, that's fine, I'm cool."

I mean, I can see how it would be nice, I guess, but I don't want to go to the Big Facebook in the Sky. Where you run in to hundreds of people from your past that you didn't like in the first place and wouldn't have run in to ever again otherwise. :P

That's you, I guess. But the idea of a reward in the afterlife for all the hardship we've experienced in life is a HUGE component of what helped popularize many religions, and it's disingenuous to say it's not important to people even now.

I'm pretty sure anybody who makes this arguement doesn't understand atheists. I haven't met a single one that didn't think they were the smarted person in the room, having successfully seen past the delusions that everyone else are trapped in. It's pretty banality-shielding itself.

Well, clearly you're not the "smarted" person in the room...
