After marathoning the first two seasons this new episode struck me as being less like Moffat's other Sherlock seasons and more Elementary-ish.

Like the secondary characters were given more backstory. They weren't props for the plot. Like Molly getting married. Anderson slightly losing him mind and starting a Sherlock mystery/fan group. Waston getting married and getting back into practice. Even Sherlock wasn't his usual detached self. He was more emotional. I don't see season one or season two Sherlock doing half the stuff he did in this episode. He did it for emotions rather than cases. Again, that reminded me of Elementary's Sherlock.

I think you're right. He really did seem to be *acknowledging* the emotions and whatnot of other people, and actually trying to be more human with his own reactions. I adored his interactions with Molly, how gentle he was with her.

And his rather childish glee over 'surprising' John, and he even seems to like Mary, which is fun.

His two years 'dead' changed him. It's very interesting.

While I agree that it was fun and interesting, I hope there's more justification of it in future episodes. It just seemed really out-of-the-blue for me. I always got the feeling that Sherlock is really quite emotional, he just doesn't show it, but Sherlock in this episode was so free with his emotions and it felt somewhat OOC.

It was a little odd, but...two years, on the move, hiding, lurking.... People *can* change. And his 'joke' on John in the subway car was pure Sherlock, utterly disregarding how his actions might affect other people, so.... I wasn't too bothered by it.
