It's the fucking father who says stuff about his daughters hair and what he says is that she looks prettier with straight hair.

Again, you don't know what you're talking about and so I'm not sure why you're upset about something you obviously haven't read at all in any way ever. You wanna tell me it's shitty after you read the material? Go ahead. That's legit.

Here, since FJ's given up, I'll try to explain it one more time: the mother is white and the father is mixed race. Both of them subscribe to a perceived "white" mindset and behaviour. What we can ascertain from the limited time both have been on screen is that the mother loves her husband despite his race and the husband's internalized racism translates to him being just as complicit, if not more so, in the mistreatment of daughter Sal, who comes off as more "black" than son Walky. This leads to the dad specifically telling Sal she looks better with straight hair. Walky himself, as the "favourite son" is just as complicit, explaining to a culturally sheltered girl who asks what race he and Sal are (so as to not offend in the future) that Sal is black while he is a generic beige. He does it out of earshot of Sal, too.

It is if you consider the (until Willis said otherwise) plausible argument that her criminal past and quick to confrontation nature are a big factor in how her parents deal with her.
