Because we have become a society that accepts books and movies that play to the lowest common denominator. There has always been 'trash' fiction but it's always been equated with penny dreadfuls and their ilk. Now there is shit like Twilight and books that are FANFICTION of Twilight on the Best Seller's lists. Authors are cranking out books like PEZ dispensers because there is a profit to be made and it's easy. Eventually things will change. Tastes like everything else is a pendulum that swing back around. But it won't be too soon IMO.

You're talking about quality, not genre. Not all fantasy is trash, and not all hard sci fi is wonderful.
